Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I submit my application?

The SLA Graduate School application is an online application that follows the same format for all SLA graduate programs.  For the CCC program, there is a space on the application form where students will need to write in their specialization.  On the online drop-down menu, interested students will apply to the CCC program and claim their specialization in Sociology, Urban Studies, or Social Work.  Applicants need to clearly state on the application and in all emails and correspondence whether they are applying to enter CCC through Sociology, Urban Studies, or Social Work.

2. I will be applying for CCC-Social Work program. Do I also apply through the School of Social Work graduate program?

No. Students applying to CCC-Social Work must use the School of Liberal Arts (SLA) Graduate School application per question 1 (above). The separate Tulane School of Social Work (TSSW) application is only for students applying to the MSW program.

3. Do I need an MSW to apply for the Social Work Track?

Yes. While a Ph.D. in Social Work through the City, Culture, and Community Program is not the same as a traditional Ph.D. in Social Work, a master's degree in Social Work is required for the Social Work track.

4. Where do I send my GRE scores?

All CCC applicants, whether applying in Social Work, Sociology, or Urban Studies, should direct ETS to send their official GRE score reports to the Tulane School of Liberal Arts, the code is: 6183. Applicants must have taken the GRE within the last 5 years.

5. When is the deadline for the application?

The deadline for completed application to the CCC program is January 5th.

6. Where do I find instructions for completing the SLA Graduate School application?

https://applygrad.tulane.edu/apply/

7. How do I know that my application has been submitted?

The on-line system will not let applicants submit their application until it is complete. A complete application means that the candidate has filled in all parts of the application, uploaded a statement of purpose, and entered the names of three people who will submit letters of academic and/or professional recommendation. Shortly after the January 5th deadline for admission, your file will be reviewed and you will be notified as to whether it is complete or incomplete.

8. How do my letter writers submit the letter of recommendation?

Your letter writers can submit the letters electronically using the SLA On-Line Application to Graduate Programs. You will enter the name and the contact information of each recommendation provider. Once the recommendation provider information is saved, an e-mail will be sent to the online recommendation provider with an access code an instruction on how to proceed with the online recommendation. You can view the status of your online recommendations each time you log into your application account, though you will not be able to read the on-line recommendation once it has been submitted.

9. What is expected in my statement of purpose?

Applicants should explain in detail how and why they are interested in the CCC program generally and their course of study – e.g., Sociology, Urban Studies, or Social Work – specifically. Please provide a description of your intended areas of specialization, career goals, your strengths and accomplishments, and how past accomplishments have prepared you for the CCC program.

Per the instructions in the on-line application, please prepare your "statement of purpose" in a separate word processing document and then follow the instructions to upload this file to your application.

10. Should I submit academic or professional letters of recommendation?

Letters of academic reference are preferred, but if you have CCC relevant professional experience, one letter from a professional superior is appropriate.

11. Does an applicant from another English-speaking country need to submit a TOEFL score?

No, if applicant is a citizen of a country in which English is the primary language.

12. Does an international applicant with BA/MA from the United States or other English-speaking country need to also submit a TOEFL score?

ALL applicants who are not citizens of a country in which English is the primary language are required to submit a TOEFL score. If you are not a U.S. citizen, the application form checklist at the end of the application will indicate if you are required to submit a TOEFL.

13. How do I submit my TOEFL score?
