Biography
Rory’s research interests are in women’s mental health and disaster, with a focus on single mothers. She grew up in Syracuse, New York. After extensive travel she settled in Austin, Texas and worked in real estate and as a goldsmith jeweler. Rory completed her Master of Social Work at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she also received her undergraduate degree.
During her graduate program, Rory interned as a social and emotional counselor for teenagers. She also counseled university students during the Coronavirus pandemic. While living in South Texas, Rory volunteered a birthing center for expectant mothers, and on the Mexican boarder with refugee children. Rory’s experience with new mothers and mental health counseling during the pandemic impelled a desire to study implications of disasters on single mothers.
