Biography
Though born and raised in Baldwin, LA., Antanious claims to have been adopted by New Orleans when he enrolled in Xavier University in 2011. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a minor in Theology. While at Xavier, he used quantitative and qualitative methods to study the intersection between race, masculinity, and education. After graduating, Antanious moved home briefly to teach at his local high school and eventually, founded a mentoring program for young African American male students. As a teacher and researcher, he was interested in determining the part race and masculinity played in students’ grades, goals, and behavior.
After teaching and deciding to pursue his Ph.D., Antanious knew that the interdisciplinary focus of Tulane’s City, Culture, and Community Program would tailor his research interest in African Studies, Sociology of Education, Social Policy and Gender Studies and moved back to his second home.
